Florida is #2 State for Electric Car Sales (Probably)

For whatever reasons (which we can conjecture about at the end), Florida has become #2 in the country for EV sales. California is #1, of course, and has about 5× as many EV registrations as Florida, while #3 Texas is just a bit behind Florida. The most obvious these are the top three states for EV registrations is that these are the 3 most populated states in the country (though, Florida is third and Texas is second when it comes to population). However, there’s one notable issue with the data used for the chart below.

If you read the fine print there, these registration data are for cumulative registrations through the end of 2023. The numbers used here are more than a year out of date. But that’s what we have.

Also note that the chart itself makes the states look much more comparable than they actually are. With more than 1,250,000 registrations, California’s bar should be about 5× higher than Florida’s, but it appears just about twice as high. It’s a weird choice for data presentation, but the US DOE was clearly trying to make a chart where you could compare the other states and not have their EV registrations look like little specks compared to California’s.

The good news is EV sales have continued strong in the Sunshine State. “In Central Florida, the number of electric vehicle registrations rose more than 15% from November 2023 to November 2024, according to  S&P Global Mobility, an automotive data and analytics company,” The Orlando Sentinel writes. “More than 17,000 electric vehicles, often called EVs, were newly registered in Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia counties during that period, the company said.” Moreover, nationwide EV sales growth was 9.4% in 2024, while it was 15.2% in Central Florida.

Unfortunately, we don’t get a lot of state-specific data on EVs and EV sales. I’ll look around more for better opportunities for comparison, but feel free to share in the comments if you have any great resources to share.
