If you own a Ford Mustang Mach-E and/or Ford F-150 Lightning, you may now have the ability to charge at some Tesla Superchargers. Ford has also just made finding those easier by incorporating them into Apple CarPlay.
In the settings menu of Apple CarPlay’s EV route planning system, drivers can now select North American Charging Standard (NACS) as a preference, or even just Tesla Superchargers. Then, the navigation system will automatically route you along paths that use those.
While the North American Charging Standard (NACS) has been almost synonymous with Tesla Superchargers so far, NACS chargers are not exclusively Tesla Superchargers. Most notably, the Ionna network, backed by 8 other automakers, is planning to roll out 30,000 NACS fast chargers by 2030. It broke ground on its first “Rechargery” 5 months ago, and it entered its “national release phase” last month.
No vehicle software updates are needed for the new and improved functionality in the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning. You just need to be using iOS 17 or a more recent Apple operating system.
If you’re a Ford EV owner who uses Ford’s native navigation system and app for this kind off thing, you may be confused — because you basically already had this functionality. What is new here is that this is available in Apple CarPlay for those who prefer to use the navigation routing there.
