Funny thing — I wrote about California’s overall electric vehicle market and stats as well as market leaders, and I wrote about electric vehicles topping the charts in various vehicle classes, but I neglected to produce and share probably the most obvious chart of all from this market. That would be a chart on the 25 top selling electric vehicle models.

A couple of quick notes here: 1) The California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA) includes full electrics (ZEVs) and plugin hybrids (PHEVs) in this ranking, so that’s what I’m including in this case (I could just exclude the PHEVs, of course, but I actually do like to see how they compare, so I’m including them here), and 2) Tesla’s top two models are so far above other models in sales, especially the Tesla Model Y, that it makes the chart less interesting and fun when it comes to those other models, but that’s the reality we’re in. Hopefully other electric models can scale up much more in 2025….

Clearly, Tesla’s top two models dominate. The first surprise is that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 is actually setting itself apart in California in 3rd. Not bad. Now can you double or triple that, Hyundai?

The Ford Mustang Mach-E held strong for 4th, the only other model above 10,000 sales, but, again, it would be nice to see Ford double, triple, or quadruple those sales. We’ll see what happens in 2025 as Tesla continues to suffer severe brand damage from Elon Musk.

A nice surprise is that only two plugin hybrid models ranked in the top 25. The Toyota Prius Prime takes 5th place, but what would a fully electric version of the extremely popular model do in sales? Also, how much is Toyota actually trying to sell its plugin models in California, versus doing the bare minimum? One has to wonder.

The, funny enough, the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1S are right next to each other, and the Tesla Model X right on their tail. I wonder if Rivian will shoot above the two largest Tesla models this year?

Any other thoughts or questions from this California EV sales ranking?
